Social media character counter

Paste a post once and see how it fits every network’s text limit, from X’s 280 characters to Facebook’s 63,206. Bars turn red on the networks where it’s too long.

Your post on the line

The same text framed the way each network shows it, with an image attached. A card that won’t fit slips off its peg and says why. TikTok and YouTube take video only, so they’re left off here.

How to use it

Type or paste your post into the box. The counts update as you type, with the shortest limits first, so the networks a long post breaks first are at the top. Each bar shows how much of that network’s limit you have used, and how many characters are left or over.

Below the counts, the same text hangs on the line: one card per network, framed the way that network shows a post. A card that won’t fit slips off its peg and says why. It is the same preview our home page uses, and it runs the same checks the postpeg API runs before it publishes.

How characters are counted

The counter counts characters the way a reader does. An emoji, a flag, or a letter with an accent is one character, even though computers store some of them as several pieces. That is also how the postpeg API counts text.

Networks don’t all count the same way. X uses its own weighted count: links count as a fixed length, and emoji and many Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as two. Line breaks and spaces count everywhere. When a post is within a few characters of a limit, check it in the network itself before you publish.

Text limits on each network

  • X: 280 characters
  • Bluesky: 300 characters
  • Threads: 500 characters
  • Pinterest: 500 characters in the Pin description
  • Google Business: 1,500 characters
  • Instagram: 2,200 characters
  • TikTok: 2,200 characters
  • LinkedIn: 3,000 characters
  • YouTube: 5,000 characters in the video description
  • Facebook: 63,206 characters

A limit is a ceiling, not a target. Short posts are easier to read on every network, and the first line does most of the work: on Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook, longer text is cut off behind a “more” link.

The full rules per network, including media limits, are in the platform reference.

Questions

What is the character limit on X?
280 characters for a standard post. X weighs some characters differently from how they look: every link counts as a fixed length whatever its real length, and emoji and many Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as two. This counter counts characters as you see them, so if a post is close to the limit, check it in X before you publish.
How long can an Instagram caption be?
2,200 characters. Only the first line or two show in the feed before the caption is cut off with “more”, so put what matters at the start.
Does an emoji count as one character?
Here, yes. The counter counts what people see as one character: an emoji, a flag or a letter with an accent is one, even when it is made of several Unicode code points. Some networks, X in particular, count certain emoji as two.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser; nothing you type leaves the page.
Where do these limits come from?
They are the limits the postpeg API checks before it publishes a post, taken from the same code. They cover the main text of a post (the caption, description or post body), not titles, comments or bios.

Publish to all of them with one API call

postpeg is an API for products that post to social networks. Write the post once, and it is checked against every network’s rules, then published or scheduled on any mix of the 10 networks we support, with a status for each account.
