Social media image size guide

Recommended sizes and shapes for posts, stories, profile photos and covers on each network, from the networks’ own help pages where they publish them. Enter your image’s size to see which formats it fits.

1080 × 1350 is 4:5 (portrait). It fits 7 formats without cropping:

  • Instagram

    • Feed photo · 1.91:1 to 3:4
    • Reel · 9:16 fills the screen; 1.91:1 to 9:16 accepted
  • Facebook

    • Feed image · 1:1 or 4:5
  • X

    • Image in a post · 1:1 or 1.91:1 (16:9 and 4:5 also supported)
  • YouTube

    • Short · 9:16 or 1:1
  • Threads

    • Image in a post · Up to 10:1
  • Pinterest

    • Video Pin · 9:16 (1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5 and 1:1 also supported)

Matching is by shape, within 2%. Check the size column too: a small image of the right shape can still look soft.

How to use this guide

Start from the shape, then the size. The shape (aspect ratio) decides whether a network crops your image; the size decides how sharp it looks. Enter your image’s width and height above to see every format it fits without cropping, then check the size column for that format.

When a network accepts a range of shapes, like Instagram’s 1.91:1 to 3:4 for feed photos, anything in between fits. When it gives one shape, like 9:16 for stories, anything else is cropped or shown with bars.

Tips that save a re-export

  • Export at the recommended size, not larger. Networks compress big uploads, and an oversized file gains nothing.
  • Keep text and faces away from the edges. Profile photos are shown as circles, headers are cropped differently on phones, and stories have interface on top.
  • Make one master image per shape (square, 4:5, 9:16 and 16:9) rather than one per network. Most formats share one of those four.
  • Save photos as JPEG and graphics with text as PNG, in the sRGB colour space.

Where these numbers come from

Each row links to its source. We used the networks’ help centres and developer documentation first. Some networks only publish sizes in their advertising specs (TikTok and X); we use those where they are the only official figures. Where a network publishes no size, we use a recent third-party guide and label it. Networks change these numbers without notice, so if a figure here disagrees with the network’s own page, trust the network.

Questions

What size should an Instagram post be?
1080 pixels wide, and between 566 and 1440 pixels tall: Instagram accepts shapes from 1.91:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait without cropping. A tall 3:4 or 4:5 photo takes up the most room in the feed.
What size is a story or Reel?
9:16, full screen. Meta, X and Pinterest recommend 1080 × 1920 pixels for vertical formats; TikTok asks for 540 × 960 or larger, and YouTube Shorts can be vertical or square.
What is the best size for a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube now recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels (16:9), with a minimum width of 640. The often-quoted 1280 × 720 still works but is below the current recommendation.
Why are some sizes marked third-party?
Some networks don’t publish a size for everything, such as Instagram and TikTok profile photos. Where we could only find a figure in a third-party guide, we say so, and where guides disagree we pick one and link it rather than hide that it isn’t official.
Can one image work everywhere?
Not without cropping. A square 1080 × 1080 image fits the most feed formats, and a 1080 × 1920 vertical fits stories and short video. Put the subject in the centre so crops don’t cut it off.
